Needleweaving is a simple but time-consuming technique in which pearls and beads are woven into the strands as they are made. The result is a richly embellished neckpiece. This technique was perfect for the kitties because they are one-sided beads so have to be used in such a way that the finished side is up. Karen's matte-surface glass beads complement the amusing stoneware beads. In some ways it is silly of me to lavish so much time on a whimsical piece. Actually it appears rich and interesting from a distance and the nature of the figures only becomes apparent when someone gets close. The kitties have very strong and unique personalities as do all of M. L. Tompkins' pieces. I do hope a cat lover will find this necklace irresistible. Do you have a matching green kitty? (Please see the highly recommended book below if you haven't already read it! Be advised that I think kitties are perfect in themselves and I would never paint Sombrita, but some of the moving canvasses in the book are amazing.) Even if you don't have a green kitty you may want to order this piece today! By the way, that's Harriet in the center.)
