This exquisitely carved bear has inlaid turquoise eyes and a perfect inlaid heartline of turquoise and coral on his left side. He is in medicine pose with his head down. Like the bear, the stoneware beads are one-of-a-kind originals. Beautiful strands of natural turquoise make a striking statement while etched agates and melon shell heishi pick up the soft dolomite colors. Bear in Zuni tradition is the protective animal of the west. The Medicine Cards give bear the attribute of introspection. Fortunately I have recently been able to replace my 1875 edition of Wood's Bible Animals so have come across the curious fact that the bear mentioned in the Bible is the Syrian bear. As a cub, this bear is dark brown. As it ages, it becomes lighter so that a mature bear is cream colored like this very medicine bear. Dolomite is a curious rather soft stone which forms in magnesium limestone and hydrothermal vents. A lesser carver might have passed this example by, but its subtle swirls and interesting colors made a beautiful carving. There is something very calming and meditative about the stone, especially in the form of a reflective medicine bear. It is said to be excellent for achieving calm and is supposed to fill any gaps in the aura when held. Ahsian says it teaches there is nowhere to go, you simply need to stop and allow yourself to be your full self. |
