I believe the old shell bells were collected in Borneo. I bought them in a tangled mass of fiber and wire. They are extremely worn, obviously well loved. They make a beautiful sound when they jostle one another. The little dangle is of "real" puka shells. The extremely generous woman who gave them to me explained that real puka shells are those found with a natural hole. I made this piece with old cowries, worn to a soft luster, their shiny surface worn away to match the ancient bells. The bauxite adds a rich note of color. The necklace is needlewoven, a leather cord completes the back. |
