The Wounaan carver Giovany carved this wonderful primate from tagua nut, also known as vegetable ivory. The monkey is a very sleek, furry creature with a beautiful long tail, and capable of getting into all sorts of mischief. I placed him in a gourd stitched tree so he would have lots to occupy him. The beautiful agate (a reproduction of an ancient bead) picks up his colors perfectly. Pearls, trade beads and old nailhead beads make an interesting tassel. This piece is very light, has lots of movement and is highly sculptural. I hope you will click on the image to see a close-up of the monkey. David Quammen (Wild Thoughts from Wild Places) notes that the titi monkey, unlike 97% of mammalian species, is monogamous. The titi monkey has a unique pair bonding behavior-- the lovers sometimes sit side by side with their beautiful long tails twined together. This little monkey was a finalist in the Bead and Button show, Bead Dreams 2002 and he appears in the Collector's Edition "beaddreams." |
