Here is the story of this old carving from a scrap of paper which came with it: During the Imperial period, pendants like this were worn in China to symbolize peace, safety, good luck, health, and fortune. About 100 years ago, during the Chang Dynasty, the flooding of the Yellow River caused famine and disaster. The emperor enlisted people from all over the country to repair the damaged bridges and build dams to stop the flooding. Since those people had to travel thousands of miles to Yellow River for many years, most of them wore the Fu-Lou Yong. It was believed that wearing the lucky charm would ensure their safe return. However, during the Cultural Revolution (1967-76), the Red Guards seized this Fu-Lou Yong from whoever was wearing it. Currently, the Trade Department of the Peoples Republic of China has decided to release all the seized Fu-Lou Yong for export. The little bag has a belt loop on the back if you decide to take off the strap. I can't be sure what the figure carries in his left hand. It might be a bird or a bat. |
