The cabochons in this necklace are very thin and light weight despite their size, and beautifully finished front and back (the bezel backs have been cut out to reveal this). Fossil palm is very hard and takes a high polish, as you can see. The cabs called out for sticks, so I went hiking in the Cuyamaca mountains to find just the right ones. Avery McKinney cast them in sterling silver. I like to soften metalwork with beads, so surrounded the centerpiece with a bead soup worked in gourd stitch. The beadwork is attached to the bezel through small loops on the back. Several strands of beads, pearls and hessonite dangle above the centerpiece. A little daisy chain clambers up the cab on the left in the picture. The back of the necklace is wrapped with seed beads. The closure is a tab of fossil palm by Africa John. A beaded extension (not shown) allows it to be worn at 2 different lengths. |
