In the olden days, children, a "gem and mineral show" was likely held in a parking lot somewhere with piles of rocks on truck tailgates and boxes of bigger rocks in the truck beds. At the fancy shows, like Quartzite, people selling rocks might have a canopy for some shade from the January desert sun and some folding tables sagging under the weight of ... well... rocks. Or it might have been a bunch of motel rooms in Tucson with boxes of rocks on the beds and stacked up on the tables and floors, spilling out onto the little balconies. Folks sat out in the beautiful sunshine and reminisced about all the places they had travelled to collect rocks. There were stories to go with every rock, slab and cabochon. We all love stories, isn't that why you're reading this? At any rate, the first time I saw Parrot Wing, it was at one of these Saturday gatherings in the Convair parking lot. The stone was large, cut in a standard oval and so very beautiful! The old guy said it was rare and hard to find even in those bygone days. Eventually it became a bolo tie (here), then returned to its original elements in the Cedar Fire.
Today you will find stones called Parrot Wing and other stones called real Mexican Parrot Wing, and you will be able to see the difference. This little stone is old stock real Mexican Parrot Wing with a pretty pond scene in which you can almost see the dragonflies flitting about.
