Peruvian Blue Opal Necklace |
This yummy material is a gorgeous color! The stones are hand faceted, so each has a unique personality. Peruvian blue opal is "common opal" in that it does not have the play of color associated with precious opal. It is gorgeous nonetheless. In fact this strand was so gorgeous I enhanced it with 18k gold. Because of the metal beads it is strung on cable. Apparently Peruvian opal is a relatively rare despite being the national stone of Peru, I have only recently seen it at gem shows. It is found only near San Patricio in the Andes. Generally translucent, the color is described as similar to the Caribbean Sea. It can be "scenic" as some of these stones are with dendritic inclusions and has a vitreous to pearly luster. The Book of Stones doesn't mention it. Dr. Pough gives only a page and a half (of almost 400) to "opal" in its myriad forms and doesn't mention that it occurs in Peru. He mentions that "common opal has no particular value..." but I guess he never had an opportunity to buy stones like this! Peruvian blue opal seems very soothing emotionally. When the emotions are calm, sometimes one's spiritual purpose shines through. If these stones speak to you, I hope you will order this piece and enjoy its tranquil beauty. |
