I love Zuni fetishes! This beautiful bear is most likely carved from King's Manassa turquoise, a mine located in southern Colorado. The spirits were smiling upon me when I found the beautiful shield-shaped cabochon which looks like it must have been cut from the same rock as the bear. I set it in extra heavy 16 gauge sterling, with attachments for the necklace and tassel. Tiny bits of lapis and vintage seed beads give it a little zip of extra color. It is signed and dated.

According to Kunz (The Curious Lore of Precious Stones), some Native Americans believed a turquoise could be found at the end of a rainbow. The bear symbolizes introspection and is found in the west in many variations of the medicine wheel. All the books mention the bear's love of honey, the sweetness of life. It's odd they don't mention bears also love the salmon of wisdom!
