  Item #280             Lost in Fire

This fascinating agate has an unusual natural opening with drusy crystals inside. It is set in sterling. Please click on the image to see how the back was designed to protect the protrusions within the opening (you can't see the silverwork from the front, but it follows the back edge of the crystal interior). The extension (not shown) hooks in to allow the necklace to be worn at lengths between 17" and 27". I gave up counting the hours spent on this piece! The metalwork was quite time-consuming, with the hammered, shaped overlay on the back, the complicated opening, the large bezel, and the multiple attachments. The gourd stitched ruffle took roughly forever since the stone is quite thick and the ruffle has to wrap around from the back. In gourd stitch, every tiny seed bead is attached individually. The needlewoven necklace portion adds to the richness of the overall composition by including different types of pearls, jasper, and even a couple of my hand-made beads sliced in half to simulate pieces of the agate. As you would guess, you can't buy glass rod that matches the colors in the agate, so the apparently extremely simple beads are formed from cane and twisties made of various colors to try to match the color and the swirling shapes in the agate. The necklace is signed and dated.
