Another piece reflecting Lynne Merchant's instruction in wire work (thank you Lynne!). This one combines wonderful huge turquoise and carnelian beads with silver and other elements. It is a dramatic piece! The old ornament has hollow elements which jingle delightfully when you move. The sound is not loud or annoying at in any way, just a gentle melody which makes this piece very pleasant to wear.

Sofianides and Harlow (Gems, Crystals, and Minerals) give turquoise two "probable firsts-- first to be mined and first to be imitated." Egyptian turquoise beads dating to 4000 B.C. have been found. They also recount various legends about this beautiful stone, for example, in Persia, one who could see the reflection of a new moon on turquoise was certain to have good luck and be protected from evil. It has long been thought to protect one from falls, particularly from horseback. Kunz (The Curious Lore of Precious Stones) relates its "singular virtue" of striking the hour correctly when suspended from a cord. It is a sacred stone to many Native American people.

The carnelian is said to be the gemstone associated with Virgo. Mohammed and Napoleon had seals of carnelian. The Lapidario of Alfonso X recommends that it be worn by those who have a weak voice or are timid in speech.
